any unix can be turned into a GNU system by installing the GNU extensions.
i guess pauls argument is, that since GNU is (in theory) available
on IRIX, Solaris, AIX, HP-UX, UNIX-flavour-of-the-year 
using GNU-extensions does not loose much portability.
