I should learn to say what I mean.  "unrequested" meant "not requested by
me".  WWWOFFLE is blameless.

I followed this up.

Mozilla (help file) suggests "disabling java and java-script" as a
strategy for <stopping|hindering> automatic fetches.  My preferred
browser - Linux Opera - has a similar option.

I have followed the suggestion and will doubtless discover in due course
what I have achieved.
