Hi Andrew,

good guess!  This appears to have been the problem, it was in DOS format.
To answer your other questions, yes, the conf file did work previously
without a flaw and the error message always appeared on the same line
after which the script stopped.

I encountered another problem in that all section comments were gone
from the resulting conf file.  After inspection of the error messages I
found out though that apparently the script did not find
wwwoffle.conf.install so I just copied and renamed
/etc/wwwoffle/wwwoffle.conf (my WWWOFFLE conf file in use is
/var/spool/wwwoffle.conf).

After that, I was almost there.  Upon startup, WWWOFFLE complained about
an unrecognized option 'no-lasttime-index'.  After commenting out the
offending line everything appears to be working now.  Thanks Andrew!
