The syntax is checked before the entry is made to the file.  Try
making a change and have a look, you should get an error message (for
example try setting a Boolean value to something other than the
allowed values (yes, no, 0, 1, true, false)).

Re-reading the file is another issue.  I think that I am coming round
to this idea, but I haven't jumped and made the change yet.

If you use the configuration web pages a lot I see that it could be
annoying.  Personally I tend to use them sometimes, but mostly I edit
the config by hand.
