Currently one of the biggest obstacles of Padre adoption
- besides the fact that it is still lacking lots of cool features -
is the difficulty to install WxWidgets and WxPerl.
I am trying to attack this is several ways:
1) I have created a binary package for linux using PAR and including everything.
This seems to be ok, but it is 9 MB after bzip2 and people who use this
version are not able to hack on Padre.
2) I have asked people in the major Linux distros to include Padre.
Some of them have started to work on it with various levels of success.
In any case their results will show up in the distros only 6-12 month from
now as they release the new versions. Clearly this only helps on the
long run.
3) I have started to provide detailed installation instructions for
several OS-es.
After some manual intervention Strawberry Perl seems to work well.
Mandriva 2008.1 has wxWidgtes and WxPerl and I think the rest of the
modules can be installed using CPAN.pm
All this information is being collected on
http://padre.perlide.org/wiki/Download
Here is where I need your help.
I'd like to provide such or even more detailed instructions for all the major
OS-es including several Linux distros, FreeBSD, ActivePerl on Windows
and if possible Solaris as well.
I think it is in the interest of all of us who develop under WxPerl to
make it sure it can be easily installed on all the major system.
That will help in the distribution of every application we write.
It would be nice if you could update the download page directly
but I'd be glad if you sent info in response to this message.
I'd be glad even for partial information like how to install wxWidgets
and/or wxPerl on your system.
regards
