I also found a reference to Debian running on it:

http://liliputing.com/2011/06/archos-101-hacked-to-dual-boot-debian-linux-android.html

Which in turn references
http://www.debian-archos.com/download-debian-for-archos-gen8

Looks to be under active development by the folks on that website, and it's
running Free Office and Firefox, so I'd say it's worth investigating.

I has been brought under my attention that the Archos 101 tablet comes
with Andoid 2.2, but is also capable (supported!) to run Ångström Linux.
I do not have the faintest idea how far the support goes.

As for my current needs, I don't need anything fancy beyond being able
to tap on the screen and have this interpeted as a mouse click.
