Hi People,
Although this list is a bit quiet, I'm pleased that I still see quite a
bit of support for wxPerl around the internet:
* There is stuff on Perl Monks, like here from a week ago:
http://www.perlmonks.org/?node_id=1084440
* and Stack Overflow:
http://stackoverflow.com/questions/22592281/is-it-possible-to-draw-on-a-textctrl-and-if-so-how
(with Vadim answering Perl questions!).
* Here is a 20 minute Youtube video from Herbert in German from
April: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3rgLJ3_4qOc - When google
introduces simultaneous translation in google translate, I'll
watch it properly. :)
* Plus his regular blog here (in English):
http://blogs.perl.org/users/lichtkind/
* Applications are being maintained and launched:
http://search.cpan.org/~exw/Wx-App-AnnualCal/
* and the famous Perl IDE:
http://search.cpan.org/~plaven/Padre-1.00/lib/Padre.pm
* wxPerl 0.9923 was released about a month ago with support for
wxWidgets 3.0.0: http://www.wxperl.it/.
* Erik's repository on github, here:
https://github.com/ecocode/wxPerl.
But I would really like to see more of a sense of community.
So as it is getting nearer to the Summer and most European cities are at
their best, I would like to propose a wxPerl get-together in a city in
Europe (and I'm including the UK in my definition of Europe in spite of
everything).
There are some perl conferences being held anyway:
- June in Paris (the language is French) - http://journeesperl.fr/fpw2014/
- August in Sophia (I guess it's in English, but I'm not sure) -
http://act.yapc.eu/ye2014/
- September in Olten outside Zurich (in English) -
http://act.perl-workshop.ch/spw2014/index.html
and we could hold a breakout session linked to one of these. If
wxPerlers are already planning on attending one of these, that might be
the best option. Additionally we might get some extra faces if people
are just curious.
Or we could hold our own in Amsterdam, or Berlin, or Barcelona, or Oslo
or Prague or Milan (maybe Mattia could be persuaded to come), Manchester
(nearer to Mark) or Edinburgh (the birthplace of wxWidgets).
It doesn't have to be a large group, I would come if two others came.
If we could get ten, it would be wonderful.
I went to a YAPC in Sao Paulo last year and there were a few wxPerl
programmers there, but most people were just there for the party (so to
speak), there were a lot of c-programmers too.
Maybe we could even extend it to the wider wxWidgets community too.
And we have a lot to talk about:
- how do we position ourselves for the future?
- how do we share code and support each other?
- what makes wxPerl our choice?
- wxPerl on mobile/touchscreen devices?
- Show and tell, bring your programs and demonstrate them to share
ideas, what have you done with it, Padre IDE etc.
I would love to show you what I've done with wxPerl. Maybe we could
exchange ideas.
Anyhow what do you think?
- Should we hold our own or join another?
- When and where should we meet?
- What would the agenda be?
Very best regards,
Steve.
