I suggest you move aside ~/.bashrc ~/.bash_profile ~/.profile, and any other 
shell init scripts you have and confirm that XQuartz.app then launches ok.  
Then start moving your init scripts back into place until you find the culprit. 
 Then start commenting out things in the script until you find the problematic 
section.
