(1) I did log out and log back in; unfortunately that didn't resolve my issue (2) echo $DISPLAY yields locally: /private/tmp/com.apple.launchd.TkyC1AT8eL/org.macosforge.xquartz:0 and on the remote system: login001:18.0 (login001 is the name of the remote login node). (3) When I try to run remote emacs /other X client software , I get the standard error : Application initialization failed: couldn't connect to display "login001:18.0" Unable to initialize window system.
