IIRC, macos (or at least MACOS + Devtools) COMES with a non-X11 version of emacs that lives in /usr/bin, so it’s pretty easy to think you’re set, when you still need to install something, or to have path-based confusion. (I don’t recall how/where the X11-enabled emacs on my system came from. One of the package managers, I think.)
