Hi Chris (and Jeremy), Thank you for your post. So there's a bug in xquartz that's been around since 2017 that's affecting the High Performance Computing Center at the University of Edinburgh?
https://www.epcc.ed.ac.uk/blog/2017/05/24/x-windows-and-xquartz-archer I checked bugzilla and see 1. that the bug is marked as "resolved", and 2. that there's a patch available: https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=96260 It would be great if the XQuartz people could release a binary (DMG) that includes the patch. I can see a lot of people still being affected by this, and not knowing about a resolution via the MacPorts version. Cheers, Bill. W.
