IMHO, not putting words in anyone's mouth, it's my impression that Wayland exists because many people consider fast graphics to be more important than network graphics. In a word: games. But we're still lugging around VT-100 (and Tektronix!) emulation 3 decades after the last such machine was manufactured. The Wayland folks are being forced, reluctantly or not, to answer to demand for backward compatibility. I think they consider X11 support to be a necessary but insufficient condition for Wayland to gain acceptance. > Do you happen to know if there's recognition and appreciation of the > need to run applications remotely, or is there a general consensus to > "just use VNC"? I think they would tell you X11 is useful when you need a network and slow when you don't. I imagine they'd also say the X11 model of a display doesn't map well onto modern hardware. If you read the document I linked to, you'll see there's integral support for X11 in Wayland. I haven't used it, and have no opinion on how good or complete it is.
