I think that emacs may be a good operating system interface but that it is an entry-level text editor (something like this has been said many times before). I prefer to interact more directly with the operating system via a shell command prompt and to use vi as what I find is the most productive and effective text transformational tool I have ever encountered (and a useful interface to the operating system for many functions).
