Dreck! That thing said "none".
Using "esddsp", I got the same lock-ups and errors:
ALSA lib pcm_hw.c:1401:(_snd_pcm_hw_open) Invalid value for card
ALSA lib pulse.c:229:(pulse_connect) PulseAudio: Unable to connect:
Zeitüberschreitung
But with "padsp", it works! Yay!
The /etc/asound.conf file (as described on the ubuntu wiki page) is
required, though.
