Only some applications listen to it, and normally it only affects font size. What I need is dumb pixel doubling. This is also important for working with low-res desktops on HiDPI screens, so I am optimistic that X2GO will support it one day. NoMachine may support it already.
You could launch a session (local X11 or X2Go) and launch a second session via X2Go desktop sharing ("Connect to local desktop" as session type in X2Go Client).
In shadow mode (desktop sharing), NX 3.x can do some scaling of the remote/shadowed desktop. Maybe this fits your use case.
