Actually, stree is being removed from the current CVS
tree in favor of the new DTM or Document Table Model
that Scott and co. are working on, which will be in
all future Xalan builds. So unless you need to stay
on older xalan versions, stree questions won't matter
soon.
As for performance, yes, it does make something of a
difference to the processor. Scott or Joe will have
to chime in with the details, although it may be a
couple of days since we're still working on finishing
the DTM work and fixing a few bugs. I know Scott's
posted a bunch of rough design notes about the DTM to
the list over time, and if you'd like to delve into
the code, it's in
xml-xalan/java/src/org/apache/xml/dtm
Oh, and in general please try to avoid sending HTML
email to the list, since many people still use older
mailers or text-based archives to read this list, so
it really doesn't do most of us any good. (See
marc.theaimsgroup.com for my favorite archive).
