Which version of xalan are you using? If you're not using the latest, maybe
you can try upgrading to the latest version and try to reproduce the
problem? If you are still getting an NPE, please attach the entire stack
trace so we can try to figure out what is going on.

When I put a TraceListener on the transformation I always get ENDELEMENT:
null for the output. I have repeatedly tried to upgrade to Xalan 2.1.0 in
order to use translets/Templates but always get a NullPointerException when
trying to parse through the XSL. Will this cause the NullPointerException
and has anyone seen this and know how to fix it.
