Actually, I don't think Xalan is using the XT string formatter -- I believe it's 
either using the Java function libraries (for Java strings) or a converter built 
into our own FastStringBuffers, depending on where the datum comes from. I 
suspect the former is what XSLTC is also using...?

I agree that a trailing zero appears to be wrong for this application, per the 
quoted portion of the XPath spec.
