XPath position() function returns twice the position

No, it should not be 1, 2, 3, 4.  You are forgetting the whitespace only text 
nodes between the item elements in your document.  They exist, and they are 
counted, so the result of the position() function is correct.

You should consider getting a good book on XSLT or reading the XSL FAQ, which 
can explain this, and many other questions you may have.  See here for more
