Sanity check: It looks like you're asking about Xalan-C, since you're mentioning Dave Bertoni's comments. If your question is about Xalan-J, please let us know; the data structures are significantly different. (Xalan-J is using our DTM API, rather than the DOM, as its internal data model, though we provide a bridge from DOM to DTM.)
