I think I misunderstood the change. Final _variables_  should be fine; 
it's the presumption that final classes/methods give a significant 
performance advantage that tends to be dubious architecturally.

Reference: Hm. I could have sworn Wilson/Kesselman 
(http://java.sun.com/docs/books/performance -- the second author's my 
brother, not me!) had some words on this, but I'm not finding 'em now. 
It's possible I'm confused.
