DTMDocumentImpl is not in use at this time; it was an experimental "compact" representation for the DTM (based on our earliest DTM sketches) and as far as I know is never instantiated and is not being actively maintained. You should be looking at DTMDefaultBase, SAX2DTM, and DOM2DTM.
