Note that XSLT, like any programming language, can sometimes be persuaded to do 
things that aren't easy/obvious. I haven't looked at your task in detail, but 
I'd suggest you ask in the XSL Users' Mailing List before giving up on an 
XSLT-based solution; someone may have a way to do what you need.
