Hi Glen,

So, the issues Jeff mentioned were:

- lack of support for predefined entities

- stylebook has a macro expanding facility, with
<resource-ref idref="foo"/> expanding to an XML
   snippet defined in resources.xml

- stylebook lets you define multiple book.xml files
letting you generate different content for local
   vs. online websites.

I *think* we can work around these using stylesheets for styling and
formatting. We could still use Forrest to organize the content of the
website and take advantage of features such as search and PDF support.

OTOH, if Forrest *really* wants us to wait it would probably be best to
wait.

If we do go ahead, starting with C++ sounds ok to me. Unfortunately, I
don't have much time to work on this now. If there are no objections, I
would say go ahead!

Thanks,
Ilene.

Ilene,

Jeff raised some concerns
(http://marc.theaimsgroup.com/?l=xalan-dev&m=105588237516379&w=2)
about Forrest not yet being as powerful as Stylebook
in certain features that Xalan is currently using.

I guess the first question for the Xalan team before
proceeding to Forrest then, is whether any of the
three issues Jeff raised are sufficiently
"show-stoppers" to warrant waiting until V0.6 of
Forrest. If they are--e.g., Xalan does not want to
lose predefined entities, etc.--then we should stop
here until 0.6 is released.

OTOH, the team may wish to get this conversion out of
the way before XSLT 2.0 work begins in earnest--and
perhaps several more pages that would need to be
translated are created. This is for you all to decide
first.

If the current Forrest V0.4 is acceptable for Xalan,
the next potential show stopper is whether or not Jeff
& rest of Forrest team can absorb two more
sites--Xalan C & Xalan J--on their Forrestbot.
They're currently handling about ten projects, they
may want Xalan to wait until those are better "nailed
down"--I don't know.

As described here for FOP:
http://xml.apache.org/fop/dev/doc.html, the forrestbot
will read the Xalan CVS site automatically every six
hours and place the results for previewing on a test
web site. To move the updated docs to the actual
site, apparently all you will need to do is log into
to the Forrestbot
http://forrestbot.cocoondev.org/index.jsp and hit a
"Publish" button. (But as that page states, you'll
need a forrestbot account from Jeff first.)

So, when the above two issues are handled, then we can
look at converting the document pages. My suspicion
is that it would be best to convert the Xalan-C site
first, as it's smaller and probably doesn't change as
much as the Xalan-J site. I can probably best help
here with reformatting the pages--they *shouldn't*
take that much time (I would hope!)

Glen
