I've encountered this error message myself. I haven't investigated it deeply but
it appears to be a bug in Crimson in SUN's JDK 1.4.2_03. The same code executes
correctly without the bug in JDK 1.4.2_02 and JDK 1.5a1. I recommend either
upgrading or downgrading. You may also wish to file a bug with Sun. However,
this doesn't appear to be a Xalan or Apache bug, and I doubt there's anything
the Xalan team can really do about it. Unless someone really wants to hack
around in the JDK 1.4.2_03 internals to look for a workaround, I suggest this
bug be closed.
