I got the correct result with Xalan 2.6:

Are you sure that you are testing the 2.6 driver?

Description:
The OASIS XSLT test suite includes the attached test case with ID Whitespaces__91434.
Xalan fails this test. libxslt2 passes it, and from my own inspection I think the test
case sample output is correct and Xalan is wrong.
