Judging by the line number from which ExtensionHandlerJavaPackage throws the TransformerException that wraps the NullPointerException, I believe you're picking up Xalan-J 2.4.0 or earlier. I'm guessing that might not be the version of Xalan-J you intended to work with. If so, there could be some class path issue that's causing ant to pick up a different version of Xalan-J - perhaps one that's part of the JRE.
Beyond that, it's hard to tell where the NullPointerException itself occurs, because we're only seeing the stack trace for the TransformerException, not the exception it wraps.
