I can why users might want to occasionally control output in such
detailed ways, but that's how XML works, so there's nothing we can
really do in the core of Xalan.  My primary goal for Xalan is to be
fully conformant to the appropriate specs, like XML, XSLT, JAXP, etc.,
so we need to output whatever XML-appropriate lineends are.

If it's really important, we would consider user-supplied patches that
add this kind of functionality as an extension or optional feature -
although in this case, it sounds like your perl solution will work most
easily.
