For whatever it's worth, I've been pounding fairly heavily on the math stuff this week, using number() to convert strings to numeric values -- and I've found that when I output those strings they're printed in the simplest possible decimal form. I didn't see the original question, but this may get you closer to where you're trying to go... As the spec says, xsl:number is used to format a number, and what you apparently want is unformatted.
