Xalan 2.3.1 only for jdk1.4?

Is the newest Xalan version (2.3.1.) only meant for use with the newest jdk1.4?   The problems is that i have a XML/XSLT transformation that works fine with the jdk1.4 (from SUN) buth the date (XML) disapears when using jdk1.3(.1)   Not a serieus problem yust curious.   Regards,   Henry
