Thanks for the advice. I'll serialize the DOM before xsl processing and see how it looks like when I see these symptoms again. I'll know in a few weeks when its gone to prod what happened, if theres any curious people out there.
There have been some past problems the properties in environments with fancier class loading. I believe a proposed patch for that went by on the developers' list fairly recently; I'm not sure what the current status is.
The recent patch discussion seems related to security environments, I don't think applies to me. Earlier discussions mention the problems with classloading, but I don't think much changed code since then (OutputProperties hasnt, at least). At least I know where to begin my patching :-)
