I am probably missing the point, but I have been using such a 'debug'
area on all my XML/XSL generated HTML pages, and have been happy with a
simple

  <!-- Call this template when you want to display the raw xml in a
debug area -->
  <xsl:template name="displayDebugXml">
    <xsl:if test="$doDebug = 'true' ">
      <table>
        <tr>
          <td class="clsClickable" onclick="debugXml.className=
(debugXml.className=='clsDebugInfoHidden') ? 'clsDebugInfoVisible' :
'clsDebugInfoHidden';">&lt;.../&gt;</td>
        </tr>
        <tr>
          <td>
            <textarea id="debugXml" class="clsDebugInfoHidden" rows="25"
cols="80">
              <xsl:copy-of select="/"/>
            </textarea>
          </td>
        </tr>
      </table>
    </xsl:if>
  </xsl:template>

I think the only problem with this is that entities are displayed in the
text area unescaped and a simple cut and paste is not always enough to
obtain the raw XML.
