On further investigation, I was off target. I rolled back to the VM as-distributed, and xastir still crashed.
I still don't have the error (too much stuff to get ready for the flight that just ended to troubleshoot). The host machine was Vista with a version of VMware downloaded in the last couple of weeks. I'm leaning toward blaming Vista, but then my knee-jerk reaction is to blame windows for anything that goes wrong, just because that is usually the correct answer.
