I did get Xastir out of the repositories, I have not done any compiling yet,
dont know how, it is on my todo list, I am using Linux mint 13 LTS, right now
the program freezes whan I open it, my guess is it is looking for a map to load
that is not there, anyway I have to restart the machine to clear it up, I just
get the spinning circle that the pc is thinking..I did install imagemajic, not
sure if that is what it is using right now, I cant do anything with it, I would
like to just get it back to whaere it was working and go from there, but so far
a blank screen, with the thinking circle, and nothing else. is says Loading
symboles at the bottom other than that screen in grey and blank... Thanks
Terminal output...

Yes, I am displaying maps.  I am
 using the "Online/OSM tiled mapnick"
choice.  The only other Online/OSM selection that works
 for me is the
"tiled cycle" option.  I think some older choices that
 don't work any more
 need to be removed.

If those 2 above that work for me do not work for you, then
 perhaps you are
using a version of Xastir that was provided in the
 repository of your Linux
distribution.  In order to provide additional help...

What version of Xastir are you using?  You can see that
 under "Help/About".
Under "Help/About" to the right of "Libraries Used:", does
 it indicate
ImageMagick or GraphicsMagick (need to know which one).

When you start Xastir in a terminal, do any error messages
 show when it is
 attempting to retrieve maps?

What flavor and version of Linux are you using?
