The use of Minicom tells me he's using a serial GPS. The Xastir
interface to use is "Serial GPS". He may be running into trouble with
permissions on the serial port he is using. Typically he'd add his own
account to /etc/group for the "dialout" group, log out and in again to
gain the new permissions. Depending on the particular Linux that last
may be slightly different.
