I'm forwarding this back to the Xastir list. I don't have debian apt-get experience, but I bet others on the list do and can help you with that part.

What would your recommendations be - uninstall Xastir, and, if so what command line install switches would you use?

Or if I'm wrong about that - how would you recommend checking ImageMagick as both APT-GET INSTALL and Synaptic claim its the latest version? There's no Man page either :(
