Tom & Curt: that was the problem... I hadn't included /usr/local/lib in the ld.so.conf file. Once added, Xastir fired up just wonderful! Tnx for the help with that. My experience w/ Linux isn't the best, but with the great patience of others, I'm getting there! And since I've got the shape libraries already loaded, and Xastir running... I don't want to mess with anything else right now... My thanks to Tom and Curt for their helpful comments.
