We have some specific info for installing on Ubuntu in the Xastir
Wiki pages. Go to www.xastir.org, click on "Xastir Documentation"
(on the left under "Support"), then click on "HowTo's".

There's also an LSB-Xastir binary available which I try to keep
up-to-date. That gives you most of the features in a very
easy-to-install package, as long as your distribution support Linux
Standard Base. Many do nowadays, often by installing an "lsb"
package from your distribution. LSB-Xastir is listed in the "Binary
Downloads" section under "Linux".
