Jim,

Very nifty device, but pricey as with all things Garmin.

Looking at the spec sheet, there doesn't appear to be data in or out for the handheld unit, only a power adapter.

The next thought I had was what data format is the 'collar' unit transmitting back to the handheld unit? This isn't listed on the spec sheet, but if it is standard NMEA, I would think you would be able to receive it on your 2-meter, than output it to a laptop. That's a lot of IF's.

Why not make up a little waterproof beacon with a TT3?

I am sure more guys on here will have many more ideas then I.

Cheers,

Nick

Many thanks to Curt and Wes for the great efforts. The I can track the Rino using Xastir and the perl script. The carrier of the remote Rino just needs to remember to key the mic or the call button.

So what does anyone know about the Garmin Astro. It is sold to track hunting dogs. https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?cID=209&pID=8576

Any opinions as to whether or not it might work with Xastir?

Happy Holidays!!!!!!!!!! ........................... jt
