I would suggest a note be inserted in the process of subscribing
to the email list letting new users know what the default is.

group, I really believe replies should default to the list. Hitting

"reply" button is instinctive for many of us, and thinking you're

to the list only to realize you sent the reply private, and then

Be careful if you intend to respond privately now: Since the
default is to send to the list, you may have to manually edit the
"To:" field.
