I actually just thought of something that would be even more impressive and ideal for my specific situation. As I would not want to move diagonal accidentally when moving from left to up for example.
The best thing I can imagine, is to have 2 stick functions. One is WASD, the other is CTRL WASD for example. But when CTRL WASD is used, it uses a 45 degree rotate stick configuration instead, which I saw is possible to rotate the axis. This would eliminate the requirement for the 8 point axis, but instead require a dual joystick input, one with a modifier and one without, and the modifier one requires it to be rotated 45 degrees. I will attempt to figure out a dual stick config, but I doubt I will have luck. Assistance would be excellent. The 4 way restrictor would still be perfect in this setup as well, since when the axis is rotated, it will line up perfectly to still be 4 buttons.
