Other possibilities could be not enough power to USB ports or the power to the USB ports are being cut off. You haven't described your hardware/PC or what you are using. For example, for Raspberry Pi, there are issues with total USB power available and the AC adapter affects this greatly. For a PC, there are options in the configuration that allows power to be shutoff after a while. That's only for Windows PC, though.
