Interesting idea! A Madison Mendota Marathon (3M, as it were)
would really be cool if we could pull it off.

I think that grooming may present one of the biggest challenges,
based upon my experience of skiing the Birkie, Vasaloppet, and
Noquemanon courses -- it's always pretty marginal along the portions
of the course that cross frozen lakes.  However, if the grooming
were done more consistently on the lake surface for many weeks, 
maybe it wouldn't be so bad.

A network of snow fencing may be needed to control blowing snow
(and maybe collect some show drifts for the grooming machine
to scavenge back onto the course).

As an aside, once such a course were set up, we could install
a floating rollerski dock surface, for training during the
non-ice months.  :-)

I hereby nominate Karl Heil to be the Chief of Grooming...
