I've found it helpful to simply create a postscript called something like xcatenv:
/usr/bin/env > /tmp/xcatenv ... And run it on a node w/ updatenode. This will give you all the postscripting environment variables. In your case, I believe the one you're looking for is $NODE, though you could also look at group affiliation as well.
