Excellent news and well done for picking up the baton.

Subject: [xcat-user] The xCAT sunset was only a quick eclipse

Dear xCAT Community,

Late last year, on November 4th, the xCAT Consortium formally sunsetted the
project.

Shortly after, VersatusHPC announced xCAT3, a fork aimed at adding EL10 support
and other fixes. The response from the community made it clear that demand for
xCAT was not going away. The Consortium took notice and invited VersatusHPC to
join, bringing that work back under the official project instead of fragmenting
into a separate fork.

So here we are: xCAT is no longer sunsetted. With development resources
available again, the project will continue to be maintained for as long as
people still use it.

The upcoming 2.18 release is the first result of these combined efforts, with
80+ issues closed. Some highlights:

- Enterprise Linux 10 support.
- Kea DHCP backend option.
- Ubuntu 22.04, 24.04, and 26.04 provisioning support.
- SLES 15 support.
- Lots of IPMI / OpenBMC fixes.
- Security hardening across the codebase.

The Consortium position, however, stays the same. Confluent is the long-term
successor to xCAT. If you are planning a new deployment from scratch, it should
be considered.

For everyone else running xCAT in production today: we are not going anywhere.

The sun went behind the moon for a moment, but xCAT is still here. Go take a
look at what we are doing on:

With many thanks,
The xCAT Consortium

PS: We aren't "pretending"!
