Late and tangential ... but for other problems in this space, I find that
homebrew is a great Mac package manager.

Git, ruby and and everything homebrew offers just makes life easier.
Specifically, homebrew's git works better for me with respect to
configuring credential.helper and using gitk.

http://brew.sh/ and /usr/local/bin/*

Just $0.02.
