I have seen experiments including gliders equipped with said to be dual 
polarised IR cameras and also with infrasound microphones attached to each wing 
tip, because thermals also have an acoustic signature in a very low frequency 
range. The problem with all this appears to be eliminating the background 
noise. So far no experiment I know of has been successful.
