Thanks for all the support. I think I have the android XCSoar working now on
my Android [and PNA/GPS]. Yes, all the files I need I have loaded into the
XCSoarData folder on the TFT/SD card… via a PC to as you allude.

XCSoar provides heaps of useful information, height required, final glide info
every second, L/R 2 degrees, wind velocity [after 3 orbits], ETA, Macready,
Macready block speed, airspace, alternate airfields and heaps of other stuff,
all fantastic info that makes gliding a dream with few mental gymnastics.

In this installation I am using a 7” Android MID GM 10 see
http://www.dhgate.com/gm10-7-inch-android-2-2-mid-with-wifi-built/p-ff8080812d3be2aa012d71e1917f4520.html
[$US200 or so]. I am not sure how the 7” Android MID will go in broad
daylight, but it has 12 volt input. But a 7” box consumes considerable
instrument panel space.

If I were designing a brand new instrument panel now I would have basic
instruments, a Tasman vario, and XCSoar on a PNA/Android of some sort hard
glued to the panel. All I think you need for well less than $1,000?

I have also ‘cracked’ several cheap car GPS to operate XCSoar. 4.3”, 5” etc and
they provide the same great XCSoar information for well less than $150

While connection to ASI and other instruments improves data it comes with
wiring complications. A stand alone adapted GPS can be easily shifted between
gliders [and car], provide the great information, and log flights on SD cards
etc. Great for those [like me] who fly a variety of Club gliders. All you
need is 12 volts from a cigarette lighter fitting and suction cap it onto the
canopy somewhere logical.

Fantastic in flight info, but remember lookout! It takes
discipline to only scan the PNA 3 times a minute or so.

Now to go gliding somewhere this weekend? SMFSLT.

PS, Yes I could usefully use a SZD 48 Standard Jantar polar… [also Puchacz, Ls
10, Discus, etc if you know where these files are on the net.

What Android device are you loading onto? It took several tries and and
combinations but I finally was able to load all files (maps, airspace and
turnpoints) onto a Motorola Droid. I haven't been able to try many of the
inflight functions yet but so far the maps, airspace and turnpoint files are
all functioning, as well as the polar files.

I downloaded the app from the adroid store, but then used a computer to load
the turnpoint, map and airspace files onto phone via the USB cable or just
removing the SD card and plugging it into a computer. I had a hard time doing
this with my home computer (windows vista), but it seemed to load without any
problems from a computer at work with an older version of windows.

On my xcsoar android installation, all the data belongs in the XCSoarData
folder.
