Hi there

the problem is that the altitude is only updated once per second via 
GPS. First of all the GPS altitude isn't that precise compared to the 
altitude that would be reported by a barometric sensor. The second more 
severe point though is that an update rate of just one data point per 
second is simply too slow. You will need at least something like 3 or 4 
data points per second (Hz) to get a good usable vario signal so that it 
would be worth it to convert it to sound.
