In response to message 4, Max’s questions:
I downloaded the map file US_Michigan which is a zip
file.  I am thinking that perhaps I did
not un-zip the file properly?  The program
I use to unzip files is 7-Zip.  To where
should I be extracting the files?—to US_Michigan (then place it into the 
\XCSoarData folder, to \? XC Soar Data ? or other?

large number of files, none of which shows up on the configurations screen
(city_area, city_point, railway_line, etc)

The TAF/METAR functionality is very promising but it seems we can only get
information from the main Airports.



Is it possible to change the configuration for XCSoar to look on another
server on the net to get the TAF/METARS we are interested in ?

The server we are querying is the official NOAA server. I don't know
of any additional servers that have more information. If more
information is available I would actually recommend telling the NOAA
about it and asking for integration into their official server.

I have downloaded XC-Soar 6.2 to my laptop and would like to
become familiar with the program by running the program in Simulation Mode on
my laptop.? I have also downloaded the
Michigan, USA map file as well as the waypoints and the SUA files into my 
documents
XCSoarData folder.? The program seems to
load-up fine on my laptop.? However, I
cannot load the map or the waypoints into the program.? All I get is a white 
screen?no map.? I have gone into the settings to select the map and the 
waypoints, but
they don?t show up to be selected.? Only
the SUA?s show up for selection??

What is the exact name of these files in your XCSoarData directory?

Did you use the same directory that shows up in the first row of the
configuration screen?

What do you see when you click on "map file" and "waypoint file"?

Have you selected an waypoint in the map region as the new home?
Nav -> Waypoint List
Select a waypoint
on the next scree you see information on that waypoint
Click on the right arrow, then on the "Set As New Home" button.
You may have to restart XCSoar.
It will come up with the map centered to this waypoint.

On your PC (in simulation mode) XCS doesn't have a GPS signal. So the 
map display centers just somewhere. Makes sense?

I am trying to connect a Flarm to an Altair and I unfortunately don't seem
to have much luck, I suspect something is wrong with the cable but I am
running out of ideas.
I simply do not get connection, no GPS signal and no Flarm data

I made sure the FLarm has GPS and Message enable (using flarm tool)
Set up speed at 19200 both on Flarm (default) and on Altair
Tried Straight through cable eg 1-1, 2-2, 3-3, 4-4, 5-5, 6-6, 7-7, 8-8 
Tried crossing Tx/Rx 1-1,2-2,3-4,4-3,5-5,6-6,7-7,8-8
Tried both RJ-45 connectors on flarm
Tried both X4 and X5 connectors on Altair
The Altair was running XCSoar v5.1, now 6.21, doesn't work with either

The port on the Altair must be working as if I connect a Cambridge 302 using
DB9/RJ45 cable it works fine

Also to make it more confusing it seems that Pin 1 from Flarm corresponds to
Pin 8 from Altair doco, ie: Altair says Pin 1 is GND while flarm says pin 8
is GND.
Obviously I swapped the pins 1/8, 2/7, 3/6 and so on  to not send the +12V
to GND

It would be great if someone can send me the pinout for a cable to connect
Flarm/Altair or what is often called a Stantard IGC RJ-45 cable, or any
other suggestions.

Dear Max,

I'm a young (biologically not so young) glider pilot, and in the near 
future (probably early next year as the season begins) I would like to 
use your excellent XCSoar on my android based HTC Desire.
However, a connection to a barometric altimeter would be very useful.

Can you please suggest an equipment which is supported by you/XCSoar, 
and a connection method (is bluetooth reliable enough?)
